This policy explains what Backyard Flyway collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not to be skimmed past.
What we collect
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics to see which pages people read and roughly where visitors come from. It sets cookies and records things like page views, approximate location (country or region, not your address), device type and referring site. We do not use it to identify you personally.
- Comments. If you leave a comment we store the name, email address and comment text you submit, along with your IP address. Comments are held for manual approval before they appear.
- Email you send us. If you write to us — to report a hummingbird sighting, to correct something, or anything else — we keep that message so we can reply and, where relevant, use the sighting data on the site. Sightings are published as state and date; we do not publish your email address or your street address.
- Server logs. Our host records standard access logs, including IP addresses, as part of running the site securely.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not ask for, or want, your address, phone number, date of birth or payment details.
- We do not run a newsletter yet. If we start one, it will be opt-in and you will be able to leave at any time.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. Ours come from Google Analytics and, if you leave a comment, from WordPress remembering your name and email for next time. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work.
Advertising and affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you. Those merchants may set their own cookies once you follow the link, under their own privacy policies. Full detail is on our affiliate disclosure page. If we add display advertising later, this policy will be updated before any ads appear.
Children
This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Your choices
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@backyardflyway.com and we will act on it. If you are in the EU, UK or California, you have specific rights under GDPR or the CCPA, and we will honour them regardless of where you live.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and say what changed.
