Every photograph on this site is either in the public domain or released under a licence that allows reuse. We do not use photographs we have not cleared, and we do not use AI-generated images of birds — on a site about telling species apart, an invented bird is worse than no bird at all.
Where our photographs come from
- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — most of the bird photography here. Work produced by U.S. federal government employees as part of their official duties is in the public domain.
- Other public domain and CC0 sources via Wikimedia Commons.
Each image carries its photographer and licence in its caption in our media library, and we are happy to add a visible credit on request.
If you took one of these photographs
If you believe an image here is misattributed or should not be used, email hello@backyardflyway.com and we will correct or remove it promptly. We would rather fix it than argue about it.
Using our material
The photographs are not ours to license on — go to the original source. Our own charts, tables and written content are ours: ask first and we will usually say yes if you credit and link back.
