About Backyard Flyway

Backyard Flyway tracks when hummingbirds and backyard birds show up in your part of North America, and what to do in your own yard once they get there.

Most of what you find online gives one arrival date for an entire state. That is not how migration works. Texas is both a wintering ground and a highway. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula runs two weeks behind Detroit. So every state guide here is split by region where the evidence says it should be, every figure carries its source, and where we cannot find a source we trust, we say so instead of filling the gap with a guess.

Where our dates come from

Published regional data from the National Audubon Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Journey North, eBird records, state ornithological records and university extension services. Each is named on the page that uses it.

Where they will come from next

From readers. Each spring we collect first-sighting reports and build a live migration map from them. Published data tells you what a normal year looks like; your neighbours tell you what this year looks like.
