Short answer: southern Ohio can expect Ruby-throated Hummingbirds by about 10 April. The rest of the state runs roughly ten days later, by about 20 April. Have a feeder up by the first week of April.
Ohio straddles a line. The southern counties fall into the same arrival band as Kentucky and West Virginia; the rest of the state belongs with Pennsylvania and New York. Charts that give Ohio a single date are averaging two different places.
By region
| Part of Ohio | Typical first arrival | Feeder up by |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Ohio | by 10 April | 1 April |
| Central, northern and lake counties | by 20 April | 10 April |
What you will see
Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the species. It is the only hummingbird that breeds east of the Rockies in any numbers, so if you are seeing a hummingbird in an Ohio garden in summer, that is almost certainly what it is.
The exception worth knowing: a Rufous Hummingbird occasionally turns up in the eastern US in late autumn, well out of its normal western range. If you still have a hummingbird at the feeder in November, it is worth a closer look — and worth leaving the feeder up.
When they leave
Most Ohio birds are gone between late September and October. Adult males leave first, sometimes as early as August, with females and juveniles behind them. A feeder that goes quiet in August has usually lost its male, not its season.
Practical timing
- Hang a clean feeder by 1 April. Males arrive roughly a week ahead of females, and the first bird through is scouting. An empty feeder on that day is a yard he does not come back to.
- One part white sugar to four parts water. No red dye, no honey, nothing else. See the nectar recipe.
- Keep it clean. In warm Ohio weather, change the nectar at least twice a week — every other day is better once it gets hot.
- Leave it up about two weeks after your last sighting in fall. The late birds are usually stragglers from further north, not your summer regulars.
The lake effect on both ends
Birds reaching the Lake Erie shore in spring are at the northern edge of the early-April band, and the lake keeps spring cooler for longer. If you are in Cleveland or Toledo, plan for the later date; if you are near the river in the south, plan for the earlier one.
